5 Roof Coating Application Errors to Avoid

Roof coatings can extend the roof’s lifespan and protect it from harmful ultraviolet rays. They can also improve the appearance of old roofs.

In today’s post, your leading roofing expert, Earl W. Johnston Roofing, LLC, highlights critical errors to avoid when applying roof coatings from.

1. Inadequate Preparation – Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations regarding preparation. Never apply roof coatings on a surface that’s covered with frost and ice. The roof must be dry for solvent-based coating products unless the formulation is suitable for wet surfaces.

2. Applying Before Storms – Rainfall can cause the coating to wash off from the rooftop. However, there are coatings that can resist light rain and heavy dew. If possible, have the job done on a sunny day in the afternoon. A warm roof temperature can improve the overall cure rate. For coatings that require special care like emulsified-asphalt aluminum, follow the recommendations of the manufacturer.

3. Coating Too Thinly – If the coating is applied too thinly, it won’t perform properly. The water component of the coating can evaporate during application. Add more wet mils during application to make up for the lost mils while the coating is drying. At Earl W. Johnston Roofing, LLC, our team is professionally trained on the proper application of reflective coatings for energy-efficient commercial roofing.

4. Coating Too Thickly – Thick layers of coating can cause blisters, bubbles and film to form in the coating. This is because the coating under the surface isn’t given enough time to dry before the surface itself does. Waters and chemicals can be trapped in between the layers of coating.

5. Improper Mixing – Denser components of the coating can sink to the bottom of the container, so you must stir it before using. This ensures you achieve proper consistency during application. Don’t stir the mixture too vigorously, as this can cause bubbles to form, which can create future roofing issues.
