6 Popular Residential Roof Styles

Roofs come in various styles and designs to suit all kinds of homes. Here are six of the most popular styles of residential roofing systems.

1. Flat Roof

Both commercial and residential structures can have flat roofs. EPDM, TPO and PVC are among the most popular materials used for this roof style. You can use a flat roof as a deck or outdoor living space everyone can enjoy when the weather is nice. It’s also ideal for installing solar panels.

2. Gable Roof

Many suburban homes have gable roofs. This style features sloping sides that come together at the top to form a triangular shape. A gable roof can be constructed using asphalt shingles, cedar shakes, slate and concrete tiles. Its slope allows rain and snow to shed faster.

3. Hip Roof

Hip roofs are another popular option among homeowners. They feature four sides that slope down from the center, giving them an angular look. This roof style offers great protection against the elements and can be made from different materials.

4. Gambrel Roof

You often see gambrel roofs in Colonial-style homes. This type of roof has two slopes on each side, with the lower slope being steeper than the upper one. It creates more attic space, which you can use as extra storage or living space. With regular roof cleaning and maintenance, it will last long.

5. Mansard Roof

Mansard roofs are typically in Victorian houses. They consist of four two-sloped sides and are known for their unique look. With this roof style, you will get plenty of attic space and excellent weather protection.

6. Shed Roof

Often, outbuildings and small structures have shed roofs. They are easy to construct and can be built using asphalt shingles, metal panels and other popular roofing materials.
