The 3 Worst Kinds of Debris for Your Roof

Your roof is arguably the most important part of your home’s exterior. After all, it’s what protects you and your family from the harshness of the elements. For this reason, it is very important that you keep it free from any kind of debris so that it maintains its integrity. With that said, here are the three worst kinds of debris for your roof according to a residential and commercial roofing expert.

1. Leaves

While seemingly benign, a pile of leaves on your roof can spell big trouble. If you allow leaves or other organic matter to sit on your roof, it will collect moisture and eventually rot. Rotting leaves can eventually lead to rotting shingles, which in turn leads to leaks in your home’s interior. For this reason, always make sure that you clean your roof regularly to avoid having to replace it prematurely.

2. Hail

Hail damage is a common cause for concern for many homeowners across the country. For one thing, the impact of falling hailstones can knock loose the protective granules on the surface of your asphalt roofing shingles and shorten their lifespan. Second, they can create small cracks and dents on your roof which will also eventually lead to leaks.

3. Tree Branches

Interestingly enough, some of the most common tree damage occurs when trees are completely healthy. Trees that are too close to your roof can snap off when a strong wind blows and land on your roof. Even if a large branch doesn’t completely snap off, it can rub against your shingles and dislodge or puncture them.
