The Difference Between Asphalt Shingle Cracking & Splitting

Asphalt shingles are by far the most prevalent roofing material currently in use in the United States today. In fact, it is estimated that over 70 percent of American homes are protected by an asphalt shingle roof. But for all its good features, asphalt shingles are not completely indestructible. Just like any building material, asphalt roofs have their own share of problems. Two of the most common issues are cracking and splitting. They may seem like the same thing but they are actually quite different. In today’s post, a residential roof repair expert explains the difference.

Cracking

When asphalt shingles are produced, the manufacturing company adds volatiles to the asphalt mix. This is what gives them their flex and makes them waterproof. These volatiles are chemicals with a low boiling point and will be lost over time due to evaporation and exposure to moisture. Once your asphalt shingle roof reaches a certain age, it is not uncommon for the volatiles to evaporate completely and this is what causes them to crack.

Splitting

Splitting or thermal splitting, on the other hand, is caused by changes in temperature. You see, asphalt roofing shingles expand in warm weather and then contract in the cold. This constant shrinking and expansion as the weather shifts puts a lot of stress on the shingles and will cause them to split eventually. When this starts happening, it is best that you consider having your roof replaced by a professional.
