The Differences Between Shingle Cracking and Splitting

As a homeowner, you must be on the lookout for any issues that your asphalt shingle roof may face over its lifespan. Shingle cracking and splitting are some of the most common, and knowing the differences between the two is crucial to understanding the next steps to fixing either problem.

Shingle Cracking

Cracks on your roof shingles form due to loss of volatiles. These are added to the shingles during production to make them flexible and waterproof. Without them, your shingles will not be able to protect your home against rain and snow effectively. Eventually, the volatiles evaporate as a result of aging and moisture exposure, causing the asphalt shingles to shrink and form surface cracks.

Shingle Splitting

Shingle splitting, on the other hand, happens due to temperature changes. Temperature changes cause the roofing materials to expand and contract, causing the joints beneath them to increase and decrease in size. Over time, the stress from the thermal expansion and contraction weakens the adhesive strips on the surface of your shingles, resulting in splits that occur in diagonal patterns.

Preventing Shingle Cracking and Splitting

Generally, there are two ways to prevent shingle cracking and splitting. The first one is choosing high-quality shingles for your residential roofing system. Make sure to choose asphalt shingles with strong matting to ensure the longevity and sturdiness of the entire material. More importantly, stick to trusted roofing brands that offer exceptional products backed by extensive warranties.

The second way is to make sure that your asphalt roof is installed correctly. Turn to a professional roofing contractor who is certified to install high-quality shingles from the top manufacturers in the industry and are trained to adhere to manufacturer standards.
