Wavy Asphalt Shingles: What Causes This Issue?

Asphalt shingles are among the most popular roofing materials used in residential properties. They can protect your home against the elements and even increase its curb appeal when installed correctly and maintained regularly. If you’ve noticed something different in how your roof looks, contact a professional immediately. Waviness and buckling can often indicate issues with the shingles.

Here’s what usually causes asphalt roofs to look wavy or rippled.

Product Defects

If shortly after your roof replacement you’ve noticed that your shingles are looking wavy, it could be due to a manufacturer’s defect. Roofs installed by certified professionals usually come with warranties for material and installation. Contact your contractors immediately, and let them know about your concern, so they can fix the problem.

Insufficient Ventilation

Proper ventilation helps eliminate excess heat and moisture from your attic. When warm, moist air fails to escape from the area, mold and rot can develop. The moisture can also penetrate the shingles, causing them to warp and ripple.

Wind Damage

High winds can push shingles, causing them to look rippled or wavy. Your roofer can smooth down the shingles and re-apply their adhesive if they have no creases or cracks. If the shingles have damage, they would need to be replaced. Replacement might also be necessary if they have lost a lot of protective granules.

Roof Overlay

When it’s time for a new roof, you can choose between a tear-off and an overlay. The first option involves removing the old roofing material before installing the new one. Meanwhile, an overlay is when your roofer installs new shingles over the old material. The problem with the latter is that it increases the likelihood of moisture getting trapped between the layers of shingles. Once moisture infiltrates the shingles, they will start to curl or ripple.
