In 1986, Earl Johnston was 26 years old, a young father of two, and a man at a crossroads. Working within the local contracting scene, he found himself increasingly frustrated by a prevailing culture that prioritized “quantity over quality.” He saw neighbors and families being sold quick fixes rather than long-term solutions.
Driven by the firm belief that a job should be done the right way the first time, Earl chose integrity over a quick paycheck. He decided to strike out on his own, obtain his license, and build a company that reflected his own values.
That was 40 years ago—and Earl’s legacy. In an industry where roofing companies come and go, Earl W. Johnston Roofing has stood the test of time by consistently putting quality, long-lasting work above speed.

The 1986 Foundation
Every major milestone starts with a humble beginning. Before Earl W. Johnston Roofing became a household name in Hollywood, it was a “boots-on-the-ground” startup fueled by a “Family-First” gamble.
When Earl decided to pursue his license and form his own company, taking both a professional and a personal risk. Earl reinvested every single penny back into the business to ensure he had the best tools and materials. During those lean early years, his wife, Lynne, managed the household expenses, providing the financial and emotional backbone the company needed to survive.
Lynne and the children stood 100% behind his vision. This unwavering support created a foundation stronger than any roof, built on trust, sacrifice, and a shared mission to serve the South Florida community.
The 1992 Storm That Changed Everything
Just six years after the company’s inception, South Florida faced a defining moment: Hurricane Andrew. In the wake of the devastation, “quality work” was a necessity for survival and recovery.
For Earl, the aftermath of Andrew was the moment to execute the vision he had been dreaming of since 1986. In tandem with the necessary work of patching and repairing roofs devastated by the storm, he wanted to ensure that this level of destruction would never happen again.
Earl went straight to the source, working directly with the Miami-Dade Building Department and the South Florida Roofing Association to help develop and refine new, more rigorous building codes.
By helping rewrite the rules, Earl established himself as a leading authority on South Florida roofing and an expert in high-wind zones. He wasn’t interested in shoddy work that would need replacing after the next storm. He believed in protecting the real people under those roofs by getting it up to code the first time.
Growing the Family Legacy
As the community’s trust in Earl grew, so did the business. Over the next several decades, Earl transitioned the company from a solo venture into the robust family legacy it is today.
While the team has grown and technology has evolved, “The Johnston Way” remains unchanged. We have implemented strict standard operating procedures to ensure that our quality hasn’t dipped a single inch in four decades.
Today, we celebrate our “top-notch” team. We utilize the latest in roofing tech and modern installation methods, but we hold them to those same 1986 standards Earl set when he first picked up his hammer. Whether it’s a minor repair or a massive commercial project, the spirit of that 26-year-old father who refused to cut corners lives on in every shingle we nail down.
